Covid-19 crisis fund supports West Barns Primary School

In August West Barns Primary School will once again open its doors to children, following its temporary closure due to the Covid-19 crisis.

However, the school, as with all other schools across Scotland, needs to ensure its pupils return to an environment that is safe, secure and adheres to government guidelines.

The school agenda will be ‘recover and reconnect’, as it will be across all schools in East Lothian, allowing children to settle back into school without any pressure to catch up, in terms of attainment.

The school does have fantastic grounds and wants to take advantage of them in order to provide more high-quality teaching and learning experiences using the outdoors.

There is a small woodland area that offers ample shade, but the vast amount of the school grounds has no option for shade.

West Barns Primary School was looking to install a semi-permanent shade sail structure in order to provide shelter as pupils engage in their learning, but the significant changes to the learning provision meant these extra costs would exceed its current financial budgets.

For this reason, it turned to Community Windpower and BeGreen Dunbar’s joint Covid-19 crisis fund for a grant of almost £2,000.

The new resources will include stationery and books to support home learning for vulnerable families within the school community and also develop fun-based literacy, numeracy and health and wellbeing among pupils.

This play style of learning will include the creation of themed bags which would be used for contextual learning and are safe to use in terms of Covid-19 health and safety measures.

It will help support health and wellbeing by providing opportunities to recover, reconnect and engage, with learning through play.

Diane Wood, community benefits director at Community Windpower, which operates the Aikengall Community Wind Farms in East Lothian, said: “The amount of teaching and learning time spent outside means primary schools need all the support they can get to ensure they have a safe environment for children to learn in.

“Our fund is designed to help schools and other organisations ensure they can support local people, providing the resources required to ensure pupils’ physical wellbeing, and also adhere to the government’s guidance around distancing, sharing of space and resources, and access to well-ventilated spaces.

“Returning to school is vital for the wellbeing and education of children, and the positive stimulating activity planned by West Barns Primary School sounds very exciting.

“It’s why we didn’t hesitate when West Barns Primary School explained what they were planning to do with the funding.

“The positive impact of returning to school on our young people and their families will also resonate across our entire community.”
