Children's Hospices Across Scotland (CHAS) utilise Covid-19 crisis fund

Children’s Hospices Across Scotland (CHAS) have been offering a full family support service for babies, children and young people with life-shortening conditions, for more than twenty years.

They approached Community Windpower and BeGreen Dunbar for support from our Covid-19 crisis fund to help as their fundraising has been severely impacted by the Covid-19 crisis, with all fundraising events for the foreseeable being cancelled.

CHAS relies heavily on these events and without them they are unable to reach 16,000 children in Scotland that currently have a life shortening condition. This means the hospices are no longer the safe haven families can come for some respite and instead are having to cope alone in a very scary world.

We’ve provided £3,000 which could be used to pay for a Child and Family Worker for a whole month, who can reach out to families by phone and online, meaning that families are supported in the best way possible during this uncertain and isolating time.

A Child and Family worker is a lifeline for CHAS families right now, because they are trained professionals providing emotional and practical advice for families looking after a child with a terminal illness who are isolating at home.

They are able to provide entertainment to the child and siblings such as Zoom calls from clown doctors or activities to get involved in, meaning parents can have a much-needed break.

One of the children cared for by CHAS is Ayla (pictured with her mum), who has been supported since she was born in 2011.

Ayla suffers from Edwards’ Syndrome, a rare genetic condition and sadly most children with this usually die before or shortly after birth; very few reach their first birthday.

This means Ayla, now aged eight and a half, is something of a medical miracle, with Caroline and Ayla’s dad Kerem counting every single day of their little girl’s life as a precious milestone.

Unfortunately, as a result of coronavirus, Ayla can’t attend Rachel House Hospice in Kinross for respite so is ‘shielding’ at home instead.

Caroline said recently: "Ayla really will miss her respite visits to Rachel House but this enables her to stay in touch with the activities team and feel part of all the usual hospice goings-on."

Diane Wood, community benefits director at Community Windpower, which the Aikengall Community Wind Farms, said: “The work CHAS does, including palliative care, respite and support, through hospices, homecare and hospital presence, is brilliant and very much needed.

“Looking at the support CHAS provides the likes of Ayla and her family meant we didn’t hesitate when agreeing to providing funds to them.

“They are the only hospice provider for children in Scotland and have been greatly impacted by Covid-19 crisis, so our funding support will enable CHAS families to continue supporting in some of the darkest and most isolated of their lives.”

“The children CHAS look after are some of our society’s most vulnerable and as a result have been instructed to self-isolate for a minimum of 12 weeks, and we hope our funding can provide the right help to those in most need.”
