Renewable energy case studies 2013

Over £20,000 was paid out in renewable grants to households in the Dunbar and East Linton ward during 2013, generating an estimated annual carbon saving of around 17 tonnes. The project grant assisted the installation of seventeen domestic renewable solar panel systems during the year. I.e. Seven solar thermal hot water systems and ten photovoltaic (p.v. / solar electricity) systems.

Householders that have installed renewable technologies in their home will save money on their fuel bills by generating their own renewable energy and reduce their carbon footprint. Those generating renewable electricity can also benefit from the government’s Feed in Tariff (FIT’s) and householders generating solar hot water will soon benefit from the government’s Renewable Heat incentive (RHI) when it is launched, (anticipated  spring 2014).

Mrs Douglas received £2,400 BeGreen grants towards installing solar thermal and photovoltaic panels on her roof which will save her save @ £250 on her fuel bills. Mrs Douglas’s p.v’s will generate income from the government’s FIT’s and reduce her carbon footprint by @ 1.8 CO2 tonnes a year. Mrs Douglas commented “All staff of Be Green, Lothian Renewables and the Energy Savings Trust, have been very helpful and are very knowledgeable about the products that they offer.  You all made the experience very simple”.

Mr Yorkstone in Dunbar received a £1,200 BeGreen grant to help him install photovoltaic panels on his 1970’s roof which will help him keep his energy bills down saving him around £130 a year. He will also benefit from the government’s FIT’s and reduce his carbon foot print by 1.1 tonnes. Mr Yorkstone commented “I couldn't fault the help I received from BeGreen. Everything just fell into place!”

Mr McKellar installed photovoltaic panels at his home at Hallhill, Dunbar with the assistance of his £1,200 BeGreen grant. “I received good information from BeGreen. I could not have processed the information without their assistance.  Thank you”

Mr & Mrs Hamilton from Belhaven installed 0.58 KWhr  two solar thermal panels system on the  roof of their home which lies within the Belhaven conservation area .The panels will generate enough hot water to meet approximately half of his family’s  hot water needs during the year .

Mr Hamilton commented “I would like to thank Sheila and the BeGreen advice team for all their help and support during our renovation project.  At all times I have found Sheila and the BeGreen staff to be very helpful and efficient. Their knowledge of the regulations and the process to be followed has enabled us to take on a sustainable energy project that otherwise we would have found too daunting by ourselves. We believe that our solar thermal installation has reduced our carbon foot print and our reliance on gas supplies. Having a local walk- in service has been hugely useful and I am grateful for the sound, impartial advice and assistance given”.

Mr Gray from West Barns installed Pv’s on his roof and commented “Excellent service and information from Sheila and Sean. Which ultimately let me purchase a better installation and at a lower cost and kept the work locally “. The 16 panels should generate over 3,000 Kwh thereby reducing his electricity bill by @ £250 a year, as well as generating income from the government’s feed in tariff.

Mr Pate replaced his old solar panels which he had had for over 30 years. The panels were getting to the end of their life so Mr Pate decided to upgrade them as he was happy using solar thermal which had been effective in providing his family with lots of renewable hot water over the years. Mr Pate commented “It was worthwhile re- investment in the technology and receiving a £1,200 BeGreen grant was a greatly appreciated. It was an easy grant application process. And the BeGreen staff very helpful and it was good to replace our 30 year old solar thermal system. “

Mr Kerr installed a 4 Kw ,16 panel  photovoltaic electricity  panels on the roof of his modern home  in Hallhill Dunbar .Mr Kerr welcomed his £1,200 BeGreen renewables grant and commented   “ Excellent service , good communications and service with form filling  grant scheme .  Enables the local community to commit to reducing its carbon footprint “

Mr Roxburgh lives in an old farm cottage just outside Dunbar which is off- gas and has an electric heating system. After a BeGreen home energy audit he decided to install photovoltaic panels to offset his high energy bill with the help of a £1,200 BeGreen renewables grant. Mr Roxburgh commented that he found the BeGreen “A very helpful service. I didn’t know anything about solar panels until I consulted them”.

Mr Beveridge from Dunbar installed solar thermal panels on his roof .He commented that it was a “Well deserved scheme. I will save lots of useful money with this solar thermal installation and the £1,200 renewables grant helped me a great deal with the payment”.

Mrs Penny and her family are now enjoying the benefits of installing solar thermal and photo voltaic panels at their home.  The Penny family live in an old town house not far from the sea in Dunbar’s conservation area which takes a lot of energy to heat and provide hot water. After their BeGreen energy audit the family decided to make their old house more energy efficient. The back of their house faces south, so they decided to install both electricity and solar thermal panels with the help of £2,397 BeGreen renewables grant. Mrs Penny commented “Information about solar panels was readily available. The service was good, efficient and friendly. We are looking forward to much sunshine Thank you”.

Mr Van Neus installed photovoltaic panels. “The advice and support provided by BeGreen as well as the £1,200 grant has been instrumental in achieving   my installation. Without this we would have never considered going ahead with the installation. Nor would we have had the energy to comply with the Council's planning regulations and to complete the application procedure for planning permission. I really do hope more people in Dunbar will make more use of your service!”

Mr John Cowan from East Linton found BeGreen’s advice service “Very helpful  and obliging , providing good  advice and knowledge  “ .Mr Cowan decided to installed his solar thermal panels at his home in East Linton  with the help of a BeGreen renewables grant .

Mr Livingstone commented “BeGreen has been most helpful and informative” when he installed photovoltaic panels at his home.” The £1,200 BeGreen grant was most helpful and the grant process very quickly processed”.

The Reverend Gordon Stevenson was happy to have a home energy audit carried out on his manse and was “Very pleased with the service and help from BeGreen”. The £1,200 renewables grant from BeGreen was most appreciated and his family look forward to enjoying the hot water generated from his solar thermal panels.
