News - Stay warm this winter with the Lammermuir Larder...

Lammermuir Larder are a small group consisting of 9 hardworking and dedicated volunteers in Haddington and the surrounding area in East Lothian. The group was established in February 2021, and they are dedicated to supporting people and families in need who struggle financially to feed their families.

They supply those in need with food items, toiletries, pet food and household cleaning products which are donated by locals in the area. They also receive funding through local businesses and communities in the form of grants and/or food donations including donations from the local council, churches, local stores and many more.

This week, a £2000 grant has been issued by Anouska Woods at BeGreen Dunbar Energy Advice Centre, on behalf of Community Windpower, to the Lammermuir Larder volunteer group in order to help provide heated blankets and fleeces to more than 100 vulnerable over-65s in the community this winter. The project has been match-funded by other organisations and the Haddington & District Community Council.

This winter, due to the current energy crisis and rising energy bills this winter, many people are having to choose between heating and eating. The Larder, by providing electric blankets and fleeces, are aiming to reduce energy costs this winter for those in need, as the blanket keeps your entire body warm; the electric blankets are economical, costing 5p per hour to run and provides a more affordable way to stay warm this winter.

Anouska Woods, Community Coordinator at BeGreen Dunbar, said: “We have directly seen the number of people in the community worried about their energy bills through an exponential rise in demand for home improvement grants from our Energy Advice Centre.

“With this donation, we are spreading our funding even wider than Dunbar; this winter, our community benefits fund will help as many people as possible as we move into the winter months. We are delighted to help support vulnerable people within our community with their energy costs and alleviate some of the winter pressures as the Larder distributes these blankets and other essentials.”
