Community Windpower lifesaving defibrillator initiative

Community Windpower, a renewable energy company which owns and operates eight wind farms in Scotland, has funded the installation of six defibrillators in schools within their host communities.

The schools which will receive defibrillators are: Innerwick Primary School, West Barnes Primary School, Stenton Primary School, East Linton Primary School, and both campuses of Dunbar Primary School. Dunbar Grammar School are being provided with a CPR training pack purchased by Community Windpower.

This initiative is an expansion upon two defibrillators which Community Windpower have previously installed: in Dalry, North Ayrshire, and the other within their BeGreen shop in Dunbar, East Lothian. In Dalry, a man’s life was saved by the defibrillator after he fell seriously ill in a Lidl supermarket; a quick-thinking shopper remembered that a defibrillator had been installed outside the BeGreen store in Dalry, and it was deployed rapidly to preserve his life before he could be transported to hospital.

Community Windpower’s own Operations Supervisor Robb Lynch and Senior Operations Manager Tam Downie are also protected by a defibrillator in their work vehicle, in case of an emergency in an isolated rural area.

The initiative forms part of Community Windpower’s community benefits scheme, which now stands at over £6.5 million donated to local communities, charitable causes, and registered organisations. Community Windpower will cover the entire cost of purchasing and installing the six defibrillators.

Diane Wood, Community Benefits Director at Community Windpower, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to install life-saving equipment where the communities really need it. We were incredibly glad to hear that our first defibrillator saved someone’s life and, whilst we hope the defibrillators never need to be used, having them in the schools is reassuring.

“We have recently installed another defibrillator, this time at our BeGreen Dunbar office, which is registered with the Scottish Ambulance Service and available during office hours. These next six defibrillators will provide a medical ‘safety net’ for people of all ages.

“We look forward to hearing how the school children get on with their educational CPR training kits. Simple initiatives such as this are often overlooked, but here at Community Windpower we are always geared towards helping our communities. In this case, we are making life-saving technology freely accessible.”
