Church congregations bike rack plan encourages cycling

The Vestry (trustees) at St Anne’s Church, located on Dunbar’s Westgate, are encouraging the congregation and the local community to get on their bikes and go cycling.

The church which has stood since 1888 are adopting the framework of the Scottish Episcopal Church General Synod’s motion of trying to address climate change and reach net zero by 2030.

The aim of the bike rack is to encourage users of the church to reduce their vehicle use. The rack will also be accessible by the public, encouraging the wider Dunbar community to choose to travel via bicycle.

Community Windpower through its BeGreen Energy Advice Centre in Dunbar have provided a £3,500 grant to St Anne’s Church to cover the remaining cost of the bike racks construction.

St Anne’s Church has previously received two donations from Spare Wheel and Cycling Scotland and Community Windpower have provided the remainder of the funding.

As well as Church services it also acts as a hub for the local community providing a space for other activities including; Youth Choir Practice, Concerts, Homework Clubs, Youth Clubs and Debt Advice meetings.

Over a week the church estimates some 100 – 150 visits are made to the Church for a variety of activities. The implementation of a bike rack will hopefully encourage the congregation and wider community to cycle to and from these activities.

During construction, any surplus materials or topsoil, was donated to Dunbar Primary School for their outdoor garden space.

Anouska Woods, Community Co-Ordinator at BeGreen Energy Advice Centre Dunbar, said: “It’s great to be helping St Annes Church once again as it’s a real community hub.

“We have a huge number of cyclists but unfortunately not enough space to keep bikes safe and secure, so this is a great addition to the High Street, especially as it’s accessible to all.

“Having more storage space will definitely encourage people to swap the car for their bike, not only making yourself feel good but great for the environment too!”

A St Anne’s Church spokesperson said: “St Anne's Church is pleased to have installed a bike rack adjacent to the porch of the Church.

“We are very grateful for the support of Community Windpower, East Lothian Council, Sparewheel and Cycling Scotland to provide funds for the project. The rack will provide a safe and secure place for people coming to the Church to secure their bicycles and encourage them to leave the car at home.

“The rack will also be available to any cyclists coming to the north end of the High Street where there is a shortage of places to secure bicycles."
