Covid-19 fund supports Innerwick Primary School

Innerwick Primary School has been looking for support to help its pupils safely return to learning during the Covid-19 pandemic.

But, as the significant changes to learning provision are not reflected in current school budgets, adhering to government guidelines would be financially very difficult.

It meant the school turned Community Windpower and BeGreen Dunbar’s joint Covid-19 crisis fund for help.

The school was looking for £2,000 to purchase vital equipment and learning facilities to enable children to go back to school, while adhering to government guidelines.

The allocation of funds from the joint Covid-19 crisis fund was quickly agreed and is now being used for the educational, health and wellbeing support of children at Innerwick Primary School.

It is prioritising the physical and emotional wellbeing of its young people, while also ensuring a meaningful and stimulating learning experience in a safe environment, with a focus on outdoor learning.

The £2,000 from the Community Windpower and BeGreen Dunbar Covid-19 crisis fund will be used to purchase wipe clean cushions, tarpaulin and a cover on a gazebo area, which is already outside one of the classrooms.

In addition, each child will be given individual whiteboards as well as their own stationery supplies.

The resources required are to ensure physical wellbeing in terms of government guidance around distancing, sharing of space and resources, and access to well-ventilated spaces.

Diane Wood, community benefits director at Community Windpower, which operates the Aikengall Community Wind Farms in East Lothian, said: “It’s so important we support all members of our communities during this Covid-19 pandemic, which is why we didn’t hesitate when Innerwick Primary School explained what they were planning to do with the funding.

“Children need something to help focus on something positive, to help with their mental health and encourage stimulating activity, and going back to school is vital for their wellbeing and education.

“I’m sure the positive impact on our young people and their families in being able to re-engage with the school experience will also resonate across our entire community.”
