News - Dunbar Civic Week's revised activities go ahead with support from Community Windpower...
The Covid-19 pandemic caused Dunbar’s annual Civic Week to be cancelled, but with a little help the Civic Week committee has organised an alternative celebration. Throughout June, instead of the traditional Civic Week celebration, the whole town is having competitions to find the best dressed house, window and scarecrow. Everyone is invited to participate and thanks to the Covid-19 crisis fund through Community Windpower via Dunbar Community Council, each competition will have prizes. Dunbar Civic Week was established in 1970 to mark the 600th anniversary of the granting by King David II, King of Scots, of the Royal Charter creating the Burgh of Dunbar. It is a celebration of the wonderful, growing community and an entertaining programme of events is put on by various community groups. These events reflect and celebrate the richness of our community life – its history, culture and people – and provide opportunities for people to come together and have some fun. Now thanks to Community Windpower, Dunbar Community Council and various other organisations, the Civic Week committee is able to hold a version of the 2020 Civic Week. It’s hoped keeping activities around this annual event will help morale in the community and keep families and individuals occupied in constructive pastimes. Diane Wood, community benefits director at Community Windpower, which operates the Aikengall Community Wind Farms in East Lothian, said: “The annual Civic Week in Dunbar is a fantastic celebration around the town and, while it’s a shame the usual event can’t happen this year, I’m sure everyone will have fun with the alternative activities the Civic Week committee has put together. “The Covid-19 crisis fund has been very well supported by Dunbar Community Council is designed to support communities and we didn’t hesitate when asked by the Civic Week committee to help with funding prizes for the competitions and posters around the town promoting them. “We hope the competitions will help keep alive the spirit of the event and support people’s mental wellbeing at what is a very difficult time for us all. “We’re looking forward to seeing some of the houses, windows and scarecrows in the coming weeks.” Full details can be found here https://dunbarcivicweek.org.uk/2020/05/we-are-back-civic-week-2020-competition |
